New 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Overview

New/Notable:
  • Was known as the M-Class but has been refreshed and renamed for 2016
  • New coupe version available (AMG GLE 450 and AMG GLE 63 models)
  • All-wheel drive standard on all but the base model (GLE 350)
Mercedes-Benz has given its M-Class SUV a new name, a new look, and a new body style for 2016. It is now known as the GLE-Class and it competes with other midsize luxury SUVs, with the coupe version aimed squarely at BMW’s X6.

Styling updates are numerous but don’t do much to change the overall look of the GLE-Class; it still very much resembles the M-Class from the sides and rear. There are new bumpers up front and an updated grille, but otherwise the overall aesthetic is untouched which is not a bad thing. The same thing cannot be said about the new GLE-Class Coupe, which is low-slung and dramatic. Put it next to the taller, more conventional GLE, and you would never guess that they share a model name. AMG models are predictably spruced up, getting unique 21-inch wheels, a two-bar split grille, quad tailpipes, and a rear diffuser. A power liftgate comes standard for easier loading/unloading of cargo.

GLE-Class models are differentiated by drivetrain. GLE 350 models feature a 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6, followed by the GLE 400 and its 329-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6. The GLE 450 AMG is the first of the two coupe models and it gets a 362-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 as well.  The two AMG models are offered in both body styles; the AMG GLE 63 offers a 550-hp, AMG twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 while AMG S models use the same engine, just tuned up to 577-hp. Rounding things out is an efficient diesel model, the GLE 300d which has a 201-hp, twin-turbo 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. All-wheel drive is standard on all models except the GLE 350, where it is optional. A seven-speed automatic transmission is the only one available.

Inside, the five-seat GLE-Class gets a similar treatment to the exterior; slight evolution over revolution. Mercedes intuitive touch pad + physical controller setup returns, controlling the latest iteration of the Comand infotainment system.  The touchscreen is mounted high up on the dash, but doesn’t sit above it like you’d find in the latest C-Class. Standard feature include an 8-inch screen, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, powered/heated front seats, and USB ports. Also available are a rear seat entertainment system, navigation, premium sound systems, massaging front seats, and Nappa leather upholstery.

The GLE-Class expectedly gets the latest and greatest in safety technology, which has proliferated up and down the Mercedes lineup. Forward collision warnings with automatic braking is standard, along with nine airbags, a driver drowsiness detection system, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, auto-dimming side mirrors, and automatic windshield wipers. Curiously, a rearview camera is optional, along with an around view monitor, blind sport warnings, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and an active parking system.
