New 2016 Nissan Versa

2016 Nissan Versa Overview

  • Got a refresh last year in 2015, minimal changes this year
  • Most affordable car in America, starting at just under $12,000
  • Up to 40 mpg on the highway
Returning mostly unchanged after a significant update last year, the 2016 Nissan Versa offers excellent value, saving drivers money at the showroom and at the gas station as well.

The Versa, since its inception, has been a constant presence on many affordable car lists and the 2016 version is no exception. Its base price sits at $11,990 which makes it the cheapest new car sold in America today. Changes for 2016 include the addition of power side mirrors and rear speakers to the standard features list, and a new leather-wrapped steering wheel on SL models.

Last year’s updates helped make the Versa look more like its Nissan brethren (the larger Sentra and Altima sedans) with larger headlights and added chrome around the front grille. The Versa has a long wheelbase for its class, but short front and rear overhangs, which gives it very good interior room for a sub-compact. It also might not look it, but the Versa is pretty aerodynamic with just a 0.29 coefficient of drag, which helps fuel economy.

Under the hood is the same 109-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder making 107 pounds-feet of torque. There are three transmission options, S models feature a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, while the S Plus, SV, and SL get an efficient Xtronic CVT transmission. Don’t expect to get much out of the Versa when it comes to acceleration, but it is efficient. Models equipped with the Xtronic transmission return 31/40 mpg city/highway, beating out both the manual and automatic by five combined mpg.

Inside, Bluetooth connectivity is now standard across all models. One of our favorite features of the Versa is its roomy backseat, with 37 inches of rear legroom, which rivals many compacts and midsize sedans. The Versa’s cargo room is also worth mentioning at 14.9 cubic feet, also on par with larger vehicles. Air conditioning and a CD stereo are also standard. The rest is optional, including power windows and locks, cruise control, upgraded seat fabric, and keyless entry. There is also plenty of available technology, including a navigations system, satellite radio, USB/iPod connectivity, and push-button start.

Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability and traction control, and a LATCH system for child safety seats.
